The American Art Therapy Association (AATA) undertook an organization-wide strategic planning process in 2015 from which the Board of Directors (BOD) determined core priority areas and approved 3-year key performance goals. The AATA staff, committees, and working groups use this document to develop annual work plans. The BOD, in following best practices of governance, reviews the plan regularly and adjusts goals accordingly. Based on plan progress as of June 2018, the BOD has updated the plan to add a core priority area for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion.
Augment the member experience in such areas as member services, discounts, networking opportunities and continuing education. This also includes strategies to increase the size and diversity of the membership.

Includes public policy, licensure, insurance reimbursement, education standards and accreditation.
PRIORITY: DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION
The AATA will complete a comprehensive organizational DE&I assessment to inform a sustainable approach to DE&I. The Board will plan and articulate a clear vision and long-range, systemic DE&I goals followed by a minimum of annual or bi-annual updates to membership.
PRIORITY: PUBLIC AWARENESS
Marketing and communications to engage and educate key audiences.
Support for cultivating and sharing evidence-based research in the field.
PRIORITY: FISCAL SUSTAINABILITY
Ensuring the AATA is prepared to support the strategic plan and operations of the association.
