Join us for the second session in AATA’s Ethics CE virtual series!
Ethical and effective art therapy is culturally relevant and culturally responsive. During Same, Same But Different—Exploring and Comparing Art Therapy History, Education, and Practice in the US and India, Aishwerya K. Iyer ATR, MA, will share her experiences both as an art therapist in the US and as an educator in India’s first Master’s art therapy program at MIT-ADT University in Pune.
The session will examine the historical contexts of art therapy, approaches to art and mental health, and cultural values and frameworks in the two countries. Themes, similarities, and differences that are explored can offer new insights, deepen understanding, promote collaboration, and contextualize art therapy—translating into cultural competence and ethical art therapy practice.
Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the cultural and environmental factors shaping art therapy and the ability to compare and contrast the history, development, and practice of art therapy in both countries. Attendees will then be able to apply these insights to provide ethical and culturally competent art therapy services in the US and around the globe.
About the Series
This session is part of a three-part Continuing Education series on art therapy ethics hosted in May 2024.
The series will kick off May 7, 2024 with a presentation by Mercedes Ballbé ter Maat, Ph.D., LPC. Following Aishwerya’s presentation, the series will conclude with a final session hosted by Traci Bitondo, PhD, LPC, LPAT, ATR-BC, ACS, ATCS, on May 28, 2024. Beginning in 2023, all Board-Certified Art Therapists (ATR-BCs) need to complete six continuing education credits in ethics as part of their 100 required CE credits. By attending this series, art therapists may receive up to six ethics CE credits (two for each session). All art therapists, students, and mental health professionals are welcome to attend!

About the Presenter
Aishwerya K. Iyer, ATR, MA, is a registered art therapist from Rochester, Michigan. She works as an art therapist in an inpatient behavioral unit at Ascension Providence Hospital, Southfield, Michigan. She also teaches online in the MFA Art Therapy program at MIT-ADT University in Pune, India.
