We are pleased to introduce our 2024 Ethics Continuing Education virtual series!

The first session of the Ethics series, Doing the Right Thing: Ethics, the Law, Technology, and More, will be presented by former AATA President and Honorary Lifetime Member Mercedes Ballbé ter Maat, Ph.D., LPC, ATR-BC, HLM on May 7. Dr. ter Maat will explore ethical and legal concepts related to the practice of art therapy services, whether remotely, using a video conference platform, telephone, or text and email. The presentation will address ethical decision-making models, moral principles and personal values, self-care, practicing within the art therapist’s area of expertise, cultural sensitivity, knowledge of licensing laws, and professional boundaries.  Participants will also engage in related topics, including federal and state laws/statutes, ethical codes, the use of technology in art therapy and counseling, and telehealth platforms.

About the Series

This session is part of a three-part Continuing Education series on art therapy ethics hosted Tuesdays from 7-9pm ET.

Following Dr. ter Maat’s presentation, the series will continue with a presentation by Aishwerya K. Iyer, ATR, MA, on May 14, 2024, and a third session presented by Traci Bitondo, PhD, LPC, LPAT, ATR-BC, ACS, ATCS on May 28, 2024. Each 2-hour virtual session can be purchased individually or as a 6-hour bundle at a discounted price ($138 for AATA members). Beginning in 2023, all Board-Certified Art Therapists (ATR-BCs) need to complete six continuing education credits in ethics as part of their 100 required CE credits. By attending this series, art therapists may receive up to six ethics CE credits (two for each session). All art therapists, students, and mental health professionals are welcome to attend!

About the Presenter

Mercedes Ballbé ter Maat is currently a professor at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Psychology. Renowned for her leadership in mental health counseling, school counseling, and art therapy, she brings nearly four decades of rich research and hands-on experience to her work.
