The expansive conference program, consisting of more than 260 sessions presented by 286 art therapy experts, offers a wide-range of up to 33 units of continuing education.  Our featured speaker, Dr. Joy DeGruy, Assistant Professor at Portland State University and the President of JDP, Inc. will deliver her keynote at the opening morning plenary on Thursday, November 1. Dr. DeGruy is the acclaimed author of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome – America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing.  She conducts workshops and training sessions in the areas of mental health, social justice and culture specific social service model development.  She will also be available for a book signing following her keynote.

Also featured at the Thursday morning opening plenary is the singer, songwriter, and humanitarian Imaj.  Imaj was born in Miami Beach, and her father is 80’s TV icon Philip Michael Thomas (Tubbs, Miami Vice). “I’ve always had an affinity for the arts, as art touches you in a way that’s all-at-once understood, yet unexplainable.  Painting, writing and singing was the estuary to my love of story and song, which led to my love of traditional Country music.” The Conference Committee would like to thank Cam Busch, MEd, RN, ATR-BC, LPAT, founding member and President Emeritus of the Tennessee Art Therapy Association, for her sponsorship that made this remarkable young entertainer available to us.

Patricia Isis, PhD, LMHC, ATR-BC, ATCS, will open the plenary on Thursday morning with “Cultivating Heart-Felt Connections” and offer mindful Self-Compassion Tools for promoting self-care and compassionate connection strategies during our conference and beyond.  Patricia holds a doctorate in the expressive therapies with an emphasis on art therapy and is a licensed mental health counselor in Florida as well as a board certified registered art therapist and certified Mindful Self Compassion teacher.  Dr. Isis is a nationally and internationally known speaker in art/expressive therapies and mindfulness.
