The American Art Therapy Association represents a diversity of professionals, students, and organizations across the nation. We recognize and celebrate the work of our members at all levels through our Featured Member series.
What excites you most about your job right now?
I get excited to teach people about grief and how art therapy can be the missing piece of the healing puzzle. I also love that we live in a time where we can easily connect with art therapist across the world to share our knowledge and expertise in ways that were not possible even 15 years ago.
Has working with a particular client group shaped your professional focus or specialty? What have you learned from working with these clients?
I specialize in grief, trauma, and identity and have found my place serving a variety of communities, but the LBGTQIA+ community has become a main focus. When I moved to rural Georgia I quickly realized the LBGTQIA+ community was lacking resources and spaces for healing. I am so proud to serve this amazing community and feel like I am constantly learning from them.
“As a feminist art therapist, I believe in the value of standing up for social justice and being an active member of my community. I also believe it is my responsibility to contribute to my community through volunteer work that is aimed at disenfranchised populations. I currently volunteer for a group that focuses on using art to create community in LBGTQIA+ teens. I am always looking for new ways to use my skills as an art therapist to make a difference in the world around me and beyond. ”

What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in art therapy?
Do it!! Being an art therapist has been the most rewarding and exciting chapter in my life. In my view, being an art therapist is not a job, but an integral part of who I am. I am so thankful to be a part of such an amazing field and would love to see new art therapists from a variety of backgrounds bring their unique perspectives to help us continue to grow.
What are your hopes for the future of the art therapy profession?
I would love to see the field continue to build recognition in the wider public. I meet so many people who have never heard of art therapy. They are always so curious and excited to learn we exist.
