The Conference Committee is pleased to announce that Dr. Joy DeGruy will be our featured keynote speaker during the opening plenary session on Thursday, November 1.

 

Dr. DeGruy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication, a master’s degree in Social Work (MSW), a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, and a Ph.D. in Social Work Research.  She is a nationally and internationally renowned researcher, educator, author and presenter.  Dr. DeGruy is an Assistant Professor at Portland State University and the President of JDP Inc. and has more than 25 years of practical experience as a professional in the field of social work.  She is the acclaimed author of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome – America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing.  Dr. DeGruy conducts workshops and trainings in the areas of mental health, social justice and culture specific social service model development.  Visit her website to learn more.

Our Saturday plenary, Building for Tomorrow: Conversations in Neuroscience, Art and Related Therapies will feature a panel of art therapy and neuroscience experts who will discuss how neuroscience informs art therapy and the creative arts therapies in clinical practice and why a “brain-based perspective” matters.  They will also present on what we currently know about the brain and why additional research is key to inform art therapy practice as well as all levels of education and training in the art therapy profession.  Girija Kaimal, EdD, will facilitate the panel of Juliet King, MA, ATR-BC, LPC, LMHC, Christianne Strang, PhD, ATR-BC, and Lukasz Konopka, PhD, a clinical neuroscientist and psychologist with expertise in human psychophysiology/pharmacology and utilization of his Brain to Behavior Approach to diagnose and treat.
